Town of Elbert, Elbert County, Colorado

Elbert County was formed in 1874, named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, Colorado's territorial governor and State Supreme Court Justice. Our little town was also named after Samuel Hitt Elbert just as our tallest peak and our county. The town of Elbert grew along side of the Railroad tracks of the Colorado and Southern, Denver and New Orleans, Rock Island. It was a busy business center in the middle of some of the best farms and ranches in Colorado until a flood swept away most of the town on May 30, 1935. Elbert never recovered from the flood, but it is again blossoming in it's own right. Buildings and homes are being restored and as in all small towns it is the people who give this sleepy little hamlet it's personality. Elbert is a small prairie town located about 35 miles SE of Parker, Colorado and 35 miles NE of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

History - One Story at a Time
Colorado Style Publishing’s work has always been written under the mantra that “We let the Ghosts Tell the Story” and these reports are no exception. Using actual newspaper and magazine articles to trace the history of the properties, town, businesses and providing those articles so you do not have to find the cite or take my word as fact. Not counting it also makes it more informative and fun!  - Jo A Petit
